5 essential things to include in your cover letter
5 essential things to include in your cover letter
many people send standard, generic cover letters to their potential employers. however, such a letter does not help you stand out from crowd. there are many applicants so you should be very specific and really show why you are the best candidate for this specific position.
2. information from the job advert
you should include information from the job advertisement. indicate how your experience matches that description. you could also add here how you will fit into the company.
3. highlight your strengths
always highlight your strong points. state exactly what your strengths are and why and how this will be useful in this position. you don’t want to draw
attention to your weakness. however, if there is something unusual about your experience or career move, you should use this opportunity to succinctly explain these in a positive light.
4. don’t appear too desperate
you should focus on your suitability for the position and how the company will benefit from employing you. any information about how badly you need this job is irrelevant and won’t create a good impression.
5. contact details
although your contact details are on your cv or resume, you should include this information briefly at the end of the letter. you want to make it as easy as possible for the potential employer to find this information and contact you.
1. to explain where the applicant has got the information about the vacancy. for example, he can learn it from his friends, or in the advertisement, or in some papers, or he just wants to try his luck.
sample: having noticed the enclosed advertisement in this morning's south china daily, i wish to apply for the position of sale's manager.
2. to present personal information. this part should be a description of the applicants age, sex, education, working experience and specialty. it is in this section that the applicant presents his advantages or qualifications for the position. details are encouraged, but the applicant should bear it in mind that exaggration or false descriptions are not allowed in the letter.
sample: i am 21 years of age. after graduating from high school, i took a two-year business course in foshan commercial s ……
if you want to explain any gaps in your cv that might concern an employer; don’t tell lies, instead reinterpret the missing time as something positive. for example, a year spent travelling can be spun as an opportunity to develop initiative and team working skills through solo and group travel.
keep it simple. use clear and concise sentences. use a maximum of seven lines in each paragraph and vary the sentence length.
make your presentation interesting. highlight your skills and attributes in bold or indent them with bullets. underlining isn’t as effective or clear, so avoid it.
demonstrate you have researched the company by including some information. don’t overdo it, but make it clear you know who they are, what they do and why you have chosen them.
request an interview. this is your primary goal, so don’t forget to ask for one at the end of your letter. let the employer know you will follow up in a few days to ensure your letter was received.
don’t enclose a photograph with your letter unless you are looking for work in acting or as a model.
sign the cover letter with a blue or black ink pen.
keep a copy of the cover letter for your records. it’s a good idea to keep track of the cvs and cover letters you send out, as you never know when you might need to refer to something.
